Definition
The EU framework through which member states coordinate foreign policy, diplomacy and certain security-related actions.
TERMINOLOGY NOTE
Distinction: CFSP is the broader foreign-policy framework; CSDP concerns security and defence missions and cooperation.
Theoretical Context
The CFSP provides an EU treaty framework for coordinating foreign-policy positions, common decisions and restrictive measures. Unanimity frequently applies, subject to specific treaty rules. It is broader than CSDP, which concerns civilian and military crisis management and defence cooperation.
