Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP)

European Studies

Definition

The EU policy framework for civilian and military crisis-management missions and security and defence cooperation.

TERMINOLOGY NOTE

Distinction: CSDP is an EU policy framework, not identical to NATO's collective-defence obligations.

Theoretical Context

CSDP functions within the EU's CFSP and provides a framework for civilian and military missions and defence cooperation. It does not establish an EU army or substitute for NATO collective defence. Operations rely on mandates, treaty rules and contributions from member states.
