Definition
A geographic or political area in which a powerful state seeks privileged influence over other actors' decisions.
Theoretical Context
Claims to spheres of influence can conflict with other states' sovereignty and freedom to choose alliances; political influence does not create a general legal entitlement to control neighbours.
