Definition
The exercise of the right of self-defence with assistance from other states in response to an armed attack, subject to international law.
TERMINOLOGY NOTE
Distinction: collective self-defence is a legal justification, not necessarily a standing alliance treaty.
Theoretical Context
UN Charter Article 51 recognises individual and collective self-defence. Collective self-defence is legally distinct from a general political or treaty commitment of collective defence.
